Starting From Scratch! (...or scraps...)
First time? Don't worry! There are a ton of books on the market related to this hobby! Here is one that covers just about anything that you would want to know!
Want more choices? Just use the box below and search the Amazon.com bookstore. Okay, let's get started...
Creating the idea behind your "one-of-a-kind" book is largely a personal choice. Normally, there is a theme innvolved. What's your theme? What is it, that you want your, scrapbook to represent?
Perhaps it is for a special anniversary or a milestone birthday. Or maybe, it is for a longtime friend or a co-worker about to retire.
...a special vacation, favorite childhood memories, a collection of awards, or simply, a collection of bird photos... (you get the idea here!)
The subject doesn't really matter! It's how you present the subject...that matters!
Before you start, pour yourself a cup of coffee and find a "comfy" chair to sit and reflect on your subject for a short while.
Jot down some notes when you think of a good idea, or some of your favorite memories about your topic. These may come in handy later on...
Formulate a rough "game-plan" of what you want your special memory book to end up looking like. Visualize the finished product in your head. Now, go to work and make it happen!
Don't worry if it doesn't end up as you had imagined! (unless you are a professional at this; chances are, it won't!) But, nobody else will know that! And they will still enjoy what you have created...just for them!
Scrapbooking Tools You may Need!
Creating scrapbooking albums can be tricky for some of you...especially, if you are not artisically inclined.
But don't let that intimidate you! There are many, many, scrapbook tools available to make your job easier!
If They Are Worth Displaying; They Are Worth Protecting! (Right?)
Don't forget! If you are displaying some old paper treasures from your family...protect them! Even inside the book, those old newspaper clippings may be damaged.
For additional tips on protecting paper goods, click on these pages about paper preservation and paper storage. If you don't want to bother reading through another page or two, here's a couple of quick tips to help you out!
Use acid-free mounts to mount those photos and documents!
Use acid-free buffer paper to separate your paper item from the scrapbook album page.
Use a backer board (acid-free, of course) to support and protect those especially fragile pieces.
Use UV protected plastic sleeves to help protect that paper from fading. What, you ask? It's a book! Yes, but that book can often be left open, and exposed to harmful light!
Finally, don't display your new family heirloom (the one you worked so hard on) in your bathroom, sun room, or kitchen. High humidity over time will destroy it! Keep it in a cool place when it is not on display...preferrably with low humidity!
Random Notes...
You'll want to have at least a general idea of what you want your scrapbooking album to look like, before you start cutting and mounting your paper treasures!
Organize, sort, and organize again! Lay everything out! Look it all over closely, before you begin!
Our Advice?
But, most of all...have fun with it! Don't make, creating scrapbooking albums, into into a job! That's, kind of, the whole point, isn't it? Make something that will be fun to look at, enjoy, and pass on to others.
Be creative! Mix it up a little! Tell a story...your story/their story (in your own unique way!)
