Matchbook Box Find

by Gary Martel
(Chelsea, Ma, USA)

I purchased a wooden hand made box about a 1 yard cube in size at an auction and in it was 3/4 full of old matches mostly paper matches 500-600 and some match boxes 8-10 and a handfull of over size. I just pulled out he ones that caught my eye from the local area of Boston and lower New Hampshire and Maine. Many from florida, midwest, ohio, etc. Seems it was a traveling salesmans lot. Just curious if there is a market someehere for the ones that do not interste me. I was planning on throwing out the balance of them 400+ if you can give me some insite if would be nice. I have not photograghed any yet. Thanks.

Matchcover Find
by: collectingpapermemories

What a great find!

First thing we would suggest, is to sort out what you have. Are there any famous hotels? Restaurants? Etc..

Also, set aside the more unusual Matchbooks.

As far as value, ebay is a great place to compare "yours" with "theirs", regardless of whether or not you decide to sell them.

Ebay will at least give you a "ballpark" figure to deal with.

For the more unusual Matchbooks, why not contact The Rathkamp Matchcover Society or The Vault for additional help and information? We have links to those organizations on our site.

Perhaps, talking with an antique dealer or two, would help as well.

Have fun sorting, take your time, be patient, and dig a little in your community for some additional help. Good Luck!
