Holy Cards and Other Religious Memorabilia

Holy Card Mother Child

Holy Cards of the vintage variety can be a collectible all by itself. There are many!

Though, we do not actively collect these types of cards, we have acquired a few along the way!

On this page, we would like to show you some examples of these inspirational cards. In addition, we also have a few vintage religious books.

Four Vintage Holy Cards

Holy Cards (as to, we are referring) first became widely used by the Catholic faithful in and around the late 1800's and early 1900's. They remain so ...even today!

Misc Holy Cards

That's when printing methods made them more affordable to distribute to the masses. That, is exactly what they did!

They were used at funerals, baptisms, confirmations, and many other noteable religious events.

The printing and distribution of these cards provided the devoted Catholic faithful an additional outlet. This valuable outlet allowed them to demonstrate their awe, honor, and reverence of their much admired Saints.

It was also not uncommon to gift one of these lovely cards to a friend, in a time of need, or celebration.

 Three Holy Cards

A Small Card...That Spoke Volumes!

The Holy Card itself, was rather small in size. Most, were not much larger than a standard credit card, in today's world.

The front of the card normally depicted the life of Jesus. Often, his mother, Mary, was included and occasionally, Joseph, his father, was added as well.

Regardless of the subject, these images were beautifully drawn, full of color and detail. Intricate cut edges, often outlined in embossed gold ink, framed the cards nicely.

A Bible verse was normally included below the front image, providing inspiration and hope.

The reverse side of the card was often blank. It was mainly used for a personal handwritten message. Although, a specially printed prayer could sometimes be found there as well.

The printer's too, used this space to identify themselves! Most of the printer's originated in France, Germany, and Italy!

Bible Lesson Picture Cards

These cards were also widely used around the turn of the century. They were more uniform in nature and very similar in appearance.

Their size was consistent. The colortones and graphics were also very consistent.

The front of the card included a detailed drawing depicting a famous scene from the Bible.

Below this drawing was a Bible verse, relating it to the image above. Below that, was a modern translation, or interpretation of sorts, labeled "Truth".

The reverse side of the card's were also very consistent. The top included the Lesson number and date.

Below that were a list of many important points (10-12) relating to the image and verse on the front of the card.

Then, below that, was a series of questions, (used by the teacher)to test, or quiz the students on what they had just learned!

Wow! That's a whole lot of information on one small card!

These cards, no doubt, proved very useful in learning more about the Bible and the many stories included in it!

More Examples of Religious Memorabilia!

Here are a few more examples to pass along to you!

Two Holy Cards

These two cards were both printed in Germany and are two of the smaller cards that we have!

They measure only 1-3/4 inches by 3-1/4 inches!

Both depict the birth if Jesus; one with mother Mary and the other with father Joseph!

Here are a couple of books that we came across!

Gleams of Glory

These first two are pretty intricate, well illustrated, and very well done!

But of course, once we opened the cover, we knew why!

Raphael Tuck & Sons, Ltd...that's why! They were one of the premier publisher's/illustrator's of their times...and for good reason!

The books are approximately square (5 x 5 inches) and made of thick post card type paper stock, (no surprise from Tuck, who probably was most famous for their post cards!)

Small Prayer Book

Here is a small prayer book. This one was made in France. It is titled "The Appeal Of The Heart Of Jesus".

Small Prayer Book inside

It is actually a small single page. It has printing on both sides and includes a lengthy prayer.

A center fold transforms this small page into a "mini-book" of sorts...or prayer book.

Do They Have a Value?

Of course they do! Regardless of the subject matter, these cards are quite unique in, and of, themselves. Therefore, they have a value!

How much, you ask? Well, like any paper ephemera, condition and age is critical. Are the edges sharp, crisp, and clean? Are there any spots/stains on the card? What about the back of the card?

Many people used these cards in their scrapbooks, thus, gluing them, or taping them, to the pages. Not so good! Both can, and usually will, damage the card.

(Notice our example on Bible Lesson cards. All of these cards were glued into a scrapbook! The backs of these cards are all damaged!)

Here's an idea for you...click onto ebay and check the listings for Holy cards. Then, see if any of yours are similar to the ones listed.

If you do a search online, chances are, most of what you will find are newer cards. Search for "Vintage Holy Cards"; the results will likely be more accurate, for your needs.

In general, these cards will be valued anywhere from a couple of dollars, up to $10.00+ per card. So, if you found a box of these cards stashed away somewhere, hold onto them!

If nothing else, they are worth taking another look at...
