Digital Storage

Digital storage is a great way to protect your collectible paper ephemera and preserve those precious memories.

It's not too hard or expensive! Enjoy your collection whenever you want in a matter of seconds!

Store them!

Share them!

Send them!

If you have a digital camera and have downloaded pictures onto your computer, then you can do this!

Here's some basic steps and advice to get you going!

Digital Storage

  • Set up a folder on your computer to store your images. You can use one big folder, but we reccomend setting up several smaller ones. That way, you can organize your collection by category, such as: old post cards, old letters, old documents, etc. You will be able to locate your collectible quickly and easily.
  • Scan your paper images (using the highest resolution possible) on a good quality flatbed scanner. These are fairly inexpensive and most paper collectibles will fit just fine! Check the image for clarity and detail. Follow your scanners instruction guide to get the best results. Practice makes perfect!
  • Once you're satisfied, save the image to one of your assigned folders. Keep in mind that certain items do not scan as well as others. For example, a faded old letter written in pencil may be difficult to scan.
  • Now, take those folders and burn them onto a DVD. Follow your computer's instruction guide on how to do so. Don't worry, it's not that hard!

  • Don't have a scanner? Is your paper collectible too large for your scanner? Then, you may have to try and capture that image using a high quality digital camera.

Taking digital pictures may not be the best method for preserving your collection, but it will work in a pinch! It is cost effective and simple!

Take a clear picture of your collectible. The image won't look like much through your camera lens. But once it's downloaded, use your zoom (in and out) to create the best viewable image.

Once you have a decent image, clean it up a little by using a photo editing website, such as Picnik.com

Make sure to save your edited image.

No need to break the bank! Digital camera's are very affordable. Better yet! Borrow one from a good friend for a weekend! (just don't forget to give it back) We have a Canon PowerShot A610 and it works fine for this purpose!

    Digital Storage...better defined!

Like many of you, we are not digital storage experts. Thus, part of our job is to point you in the right direction of someone who is.

    Still Not Sure?

Are you still not sure if you want to transfer those photo's yourself? No problem!

In fact, there are plenty of video transfer services available for you to use. Look them over closely...ask questions!

    • How much do they charge?
    • How long will it take?
    • What kind of (if any) guaranty do they offer?
    • What can you do, if there is a problem with your order? (Make sure to get a contact number, in advance!)
    • How long have they been in (this) business?
    • What additional services do they offer? (Perhaps they have some ideas that you may not have thought of!)

In any case, it never hurts to ask questions. Rest assured, most of these services are extremely reliable and trustworthy. It is in their best interest to take of their customer...you!

    Random Notes...

Digital Storage is definitely here to stay. It is rapidly becoming more and more popular. If you're not too "tech-savy", ask a friend who is. Most of them would be happy to help you through the minor details to get you started!

Or, if you don't want to bother with it at all, use a professional service!

    Our Advice?

Back up! Back up! Back up! Don't put all of your "digital storage" eggs in one basket!

Back up those digital images on an external hard drive or, you can even them store them online at places like Snapfish.com or Shutterfly.com(they will store them for you)! Make an extra copy of your DVD and store it somewhere safe!

Or, display them on a digital frame! It's a cool way to display your paper treasures!

Oh, and don't forget to properly store away the originals. Need a little help? See our tips on paper preservation and paper storage.
