Attic Treasures at Grandpa's House?

What are attic treasures anyway? Well, was Grandpa in the military? Did Grandma tuck away a box of old post cards somewhere? Did Grandpa and Grandma travel a lot?

attic treasures

Think about their lives for a moment! Explore and discover who they really were.

One box full of old documents and receipts could be very enlightening...in a good way, of course!

Wouldn't it be pretty cool to take a look in their box?

Imagine this for a moment! The box at Grandpa's house is full of memories from your very own family.

It is your family history! Right there! Right in that box!

So what's in the box at Grandpa's House?

Take a look! Of course, you will need to first ask for permission. This may be tricky, depending on how willing Grandpa is to share his box full of memories. We'll leave that part up to you!

Or, perhaps you've inherited this box(s). Better yet! Take your time and you are likely to find many cool and interesting things in there!

For instance: old grade cards, birth certificates, marriage license, travel brochures, matchbook covers, military ephemera, and on, and on, and on...(For more examples, check out our Paper Examples page!)

Many of those attic treasures in Grandpa's box could be collectible and maybe even valuable. Want to find out? A little antique research can go a long way! Or, check out our page on how to find the antique value of your collectibles.

Over the years, we have found many, many of these "boxes" in both of our parent's homes. They never cease to amaze us, because there is always something "pretty cool" in those boxes!

Just recently, a week or so ago, we found another one...

We Found Another Box...in the Basement!

An Old Candy Box Found in a Basement

Yep! This is it! Just an old candy box sitting there on the shelve. It was stuck under a few old cardboard boxes (that were all empty) and a few other assorted boxes with nothing much of value in them. (old parts, etc.)

But, this old candy box had long since been filled with delicious chocolate candies. (For the record, the box came from Corey Candies, Inc. located in Toledo, Ohio. It was a one pound Gift Package of assorted chocolate candies. It still sounds good to us!)

Instead, it was filled with another variety of treats! PAPER TREATS! Take a look at what was inside...

Old Box of Ephemera found in a Basement

It contained several, very cool paper collectibles!

There were old matchbooks, old letters (some from our distant German relatives, written in German), old receipts, greeting cards, and much, much more!

This treasure find is a perfect example of what our entire website is about! We found a tremendous piece of our family history tucked neatly away in a small box, in our our very own basement!

C'mon now! Take a look around! What's in yours?

Take A Closer Look...

old scrapbook

Included in the above photo (below everything) was a scrapbook that our grandmother put together in the 1960's.

It was (obviously not in the box), but rather found down below beneath all of the other boxes.

There is nothing truly unique to this scrapbook, except the fact that she wrote captions and notes beside many of the photos.

It was in pretty bad shape, but it was still fun to read her words and try to understand her thoughts!

It is also a good example of how those paper collectibles will end up looking, if they are not properly preserved!(paper preservation)

However, we did find something else that was extremely cool! A leather wallet that our Great Grandfather, (obviously) used. Inside, was yet another paper treasure find...a bonus find!

Old Leather Wallet with Contents

Here's what was inside...

  • Hand drawn map of his property lot with a house situated on it!
  • B & O Railroad schedule from Attica, OH to Chicago, IL
  • Small Sacco Fertilizer notepad. Inside were two unique pencil drawings. One was of an airplane flying over a bridge with an automobile approaching. The other was the same scene, but from an aerial view. Kinda Cool!
  • Property tax's paid. $24.41 (1929) & $27.38 (1930) for the above lot. (Wow! Even back then, there were tax increases!)
  • Tractor parts $1.75
  • Newspaper subscription $1.60/yr.(1927)
  • Safe deposit box rental/1 year (50 cents),(1927)
  • Life Insurance Policy $147.20 (1935) Policy amount unknown
  • One brand new suit from the J.B. Simpson Co. located in Chicago, IL. This was a mail-order receipt. The receipt was for a $10.00 deposit on a $23.50 suit! March, 1928
  • Hand written I.O.U. note dated Sept. 27, 1927 for $11.00. On the back were 7 entries dating from Dec. 14, 1927 all the way until it was finally paid off on June 22, 1929!

It took this gentleman roughly 21 months (almost two years!) to pay our Great Grandfather back his $11.00. That says quite a bit about both parties innvolved! WOW!

You want to talk about a piece of history? Well, there you have it! And it was all tucked away in an old leather wallet, inside an old candy box, stuck between several old misc. boxes, down in our parents old basement!

My House, or rather, your house!

Did you forget something? Did you read our home page? Did you read this page? How about your own house...your stuff...your box? You might have a box full of attic treasures right up there in your own attic (or basement)!

What about your birth certificate, baptism, or confirmation papers? Maybe you have some old ticket stubs from your first concert or a circus that you would like to save! Grade cards, keepsakes from family travels, celebrity autographs; these are all types of paper collectibles that you probably already own!

Organize them! Display them! Preserve them! Cherish them!

Random Notes...

Finding attic treasures, to us, is like finding a pot of gold! You just never know what you will find! But one thing's for sure! You will find something! Take a close look at those paper treasures...they all have a story to tell!

Our Advice?

If you're interested in learning about your past family history, ask to look through Grandpa's box. You will, no doubt, receive an invaluable lesson on your family heritage.

Holy Books

By the way, the family Bible is a great place to look for paper treasures! Many people have used this sacred book for a scrapbook!

We're not kidding here...you may be very surprised at what you find!

You might also consider putting together a digital scrapbook to preserve those attic treasures and share them with other family members!
